Upon accepting the position of head football coach and Athletic Relations Associate for Kamehameha Schools last month, Doug Cosbie, former all-pro tight end for the Dallas Cowboys, knew that long days, weeks and months were ahead of him.

“We’re going to be going hard, five days a week,” said Cosbie. “A lot of organizational stuff on weekends. In the next two to three weeks we have a lot to catch up on, just with coaching staff and organizationally. With players, we will start at square zero.”

Coming in with the high school football season less than two months away, Cosbie is on a tight timeframe, but that doesn’t have him shying away from what needs to be done.

“It’s going to be rough, but it’s also going to be fun,” said Cosbie.

Cosbie mentioned that as a program, they are way behind and that is accredited to the fact that most of the competition hasn’t had recent coaching staff changes. Where his players are going to have to adapt to a brand new system, players at other schools will just have to work on and perfect the system they have been in for years.

“From what I have heard, there are a lot of talented committed football players on this team and that’ll make the learning curve better,” said Cosbie.

Offensively Cosbie plans on running Coach Walter’s system, better known as the West Coast Offense and on defense, Byron Beatty, former Kahuku defensive coordinator, will hopefully bring a compatible style of play.

“I just want someone who has a sound system, can make adjustments and who’s very aggressive,” said Cosbie. “Overall, I think it’s a really good fit and I look forward to working with him.”

According to Cosbie, the community can expect to see Kamehameha being aggressive on both sides of the ball this season and he is looking forward to hitting the field.

“Whenever the first day of practice is, we will be there,” said Cosbie.
